Mallee growers to be updated and have a say on grains research
Date: 25 Feb 2022

Grain growers in South Australia’s Murray Mallee are being provided with a unique opportunity to learn about outcomes from locally-relevant studies, trials and industry initiatives and to directly contribute ideas for future investment in grains research to help build profitability within their farming systems.
Mallee Sustainable Farming’s (MSF) Mallee Research Update at Karoonda on March 7 will be combined with a Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) National Grower Network Forum.
Starting with registration at 8.30am, the Mallee Research Update at the Karoonda Football Club will feature a line-up of guest speakers addressing topics of importance to local growers.
Speakers include Dr Sean Mason from Agronomy Solutions and Dr Therese McBeath from CSIRO who will discuss fertiliser budgeting for the season ahead and the nitrogen bank system, and Professor Chris Preston from the University of Adelaide who will address herbicide resistance and in particular the status of resistance in barley grass.
Michael Moodie from Frontier Farming Systems will look at learnings from soil amelioration research in 2021 and will join with Tanja Morgan from MSF in a session about the Mallee Seeps Decision Tree and a summary of associated research.
The NGN Forum will start at 1.30pm, following lunch.
GRDC Grower Relations Manager – South, Randall Wilksch, says the facilitated forum will identify factors impacting farm productivity and profitability and review opportunities for local GRDC research, development and extension support.
“These regional forums are designed to capture local priorities and enable a genuine discussion among participants about how grower levies are being invested by GRDC,” Mr WIlksch says.
“Participants can raise their ideas in-person with GRDC staff, and they will also gain insights into current GRDC-invested projects which address issues relevant to the Murray Mallee region.”
All growers, advisers and industry representatives are welcome to participate in the NGN Forum, which is free of charge.
Catering will be provided throughout the day, and registration is essential to ensure the event is COVID-19 safe.
