Quantifying fertiliser phosphorus use efficiency in Vertosols across the Northern Region
Understanding the fate of shallow or deep applied fertiliser P in Northern cropping systems is critical to inform grain growers on how much of their fertiliser P investment is actually "feeding the crop" and return on investment over time. This investment will use direct measures (i.e., radioisotopes) to quantify crop yield responses to fertiliser application and attribute them to 'fresh' additions of fertiliser P, pools of 'residual' soil P derived from previous fertiliser additions, or increased crop utilisation of native pools of soil P. By measuring the crop recovery of fertiliser and determining the relative importance of soil and fertiliser sources in supplying P to crops, recommendations for best practice management strategies that maximise crop P uptake, fertiliser P use efficiency (PUE) and ultimately improve return on fertiliser investment will be developed and delivered to growers.
