Date: 22 Oct 2020

Queensland grain growers have an opportunity to fine-tune varietal selection ahead of next year’s planting with the release of the 2021 Queensland Winter Crop Sowing Guide.

Published by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) the guide is now available will also be sent directly to growers’ mail boxes.

GRDC’s National Variety Trials (NVT) Regional Manager – North, Laurie Fitzgerald, said the publication provided the latest information on disease resistance ratings and variety performance for wheat, barley and chickpeas.

“The 2021 Queensland Winter Crop Sowing Guide draws on the advice, knowledge and experience of experts in the grains sector, as well as validated trial data to provide growers with information that will allow them to make informed choices ahead of next season,” Mr Fitzgerald said.

“This guide brings together NVT data from the past five seasons, long term multi-environment trial yield results, disease ratings, quality data and agronomic information.

“We have included new and recently released varieties, as well as those varieties that growers know and have become established in Queensland.”

Mr Fitzgerald said varietal selection had a significant impact on crop management from sowing time to disease management, nutrition requirements and herbicide options, so it was critical growers matched varietal choice to their environment and their market.

“What the guide aims to do is provide growers with the knowledge to select the best variety for their situation, and at the end of the day this can mean the difference between a profitable or unprofitable crop,” he said.

The 2021 Queensland Winter Crop Sowing Guide features five new wheat varieties, three new barley varieties and one new chickpea variety.

The 2020 NVT data and the NVT Regional Harvest Reports will also be available early in 2021 via the NVT Online website at www.nvtonline.com.au
