Module 19: Shielded sprayers

19.2 Label and legal requirements

Published 24 January 2025 | Last updated 20 January 2025

It is generally accepted that if a herbicide is registered for 'over the top' post-emergent application within the crop of concern then there is no legal impediment to applying the same application rate via a shield to the interrow only, should this be desired.

Most commonly users will typically be applying 'non-selective' herbicides via shielded sprayers. Some glyphosate, glufosinate and paraquat products have limited registered use patterns for shielded spray applications in certain crops. Always read and follow individual label directions.

DO NOT assume that it will be safe to apply a herbicide in a non-registered crop via a shielded application just on the basis that contact to foliage has been prevented. Many 'post emergent' herbicides still have some level of ability to be taken up via plant roots.

Using shielded sprayers for any purpose not covered by a product label or an APVMA approved permit cannot be supported by the authors of this manual or by the GRDC.

This module will not discuss the products that may be used, or cropping situations where shielded sprayers may be employed, it will only address the equipment itself and how it may be set up to achieve a uniform spray deposit.
